My desire to create keeps me going, and the voices of those left behind by fear and hatred inspire me to demand that my voice is heard. My journey of discovering who I am and what I stand for, while certainly not over, is something that is not quantifiable on the scale of a grade point average and cannot be represented by my mark in academia. Is an internship to permanent position a sure thing What risks are you willing to take in your job search†¦? A few months ago, one of my clients (I’ll call him Adam) got a graphic design job he was very excited about. This job was at a company that works with government and military contracts (aptly for Memorial Day). It was officially an internship, but was guaranteed to convert to a full-time position after three months if the client performed well. At the same time as Adam got that offer, he also received an offer for an interview at another company. Adam chose to turn down the second interview and to accept the internship with the company he loved. I was thrilled for Adam, and also a little concerned. Was it a good idea for my client to stop his job search before receiving an actual full-time job offer? I expressed my concern but Adam was confident he had made the right choice. Question for thought What I like about the way Adam made this decision is that it shows clarity of purpose and a willingness to take risks in pursuit of what he loves. I also recognize that if he had been playing it safe, he would have gone on that interview and accepted an offer if extended by the second company, even though it would have meant leaving his internship early and breaking that agreement. What would you have done in Adam’s situation? Would you have taken a risk like that, turning down an interview when all you had was an internship and the promise of a job in three months? Job on the line Two and a half months later, Adam had been giving his all on the job and making a positive impression, he thought, on the company. But the next thing he knew, the promised job was eliminated. Adam called me in upset, distraught yet still hoping to convince the company to extend his internship. He was not willing to give up without a fight. What are your thoughts now? Do you think Adam made the right decision in accepting this position? Don’t go down without a fight Just a few days after his initial call to me, Adam called me again to tell me some good news: His externship was extended for six more months. What are your thoughts now? Did Adam make the right choice? From my perspective, he absolutely did. He showed his current company that they were without a doubt the company he wanted to work for. And in six months, he will have nine months of great experience to put on his resume and to bring to his next position. He will be more marketable to any company seeking a graphic designer, and perhaps his current company will value him enough that they will find a permanent place for him there. Or, perhaps the other company who offered him an interview might have a position available. Who knows what might be possible? One thing is for sure: Without a willingness to risk, and without a willingness to fight, Adam might not have a job at all. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer came into the world at 4.34pm on the 21st of May at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee 1960. Little did his parents know at the time of his birth that there son would become one of America's most infamous serial killers, not only for the amount of victims which he had killed, but also for dismembering them and his odd tendencies. Jeffrey's childhood started like any other, he had two parents who loved and adored there son dearly. They would give him what ever his heart desired. Joyce Dahmer started a scrap book on her son recording events that happened in his life, his first step, his first accident, his first tooth, his first haircut and even his first scolding. While Jeffrey was still very young his father worked long hours in his laboratory and his mother worked as a machine instructor. But the carrying of Jeffrey had been hard on Joyce Dahmer and every little thing seemed to annoy her. So Lionel being the husband that he was and wanting the best for his wife decided to move to his mothers house in West Allis, but the crack's in the marriage started to show early. There were constant fights between Joyce and Lionel Dahmer and Jeffrey took each of these fights to heart. The behavioral perspective of depression links the disorder to a deficit of positive reinforcements in one’s life. This lack of reinforcement results in the decline of constructive behavior, which in turn results in depression. Behaviorists posit that a person suffering from depression can develop a plan of action to replenish the deficit of positive reinforcement through the cooperation of family, friends and the therapist. In other words, according to behaviorists, the patient’s inability to cope with life stress leads to social withdrawal, which reduces the rate of positive reinforcements, which then results in depression. The belief that a person suffering from depression can behave him- or herself out of it is both appealing and troublesome. The benefits of constructive activity notwithstanding, dependence on others for positive reinforcement could result in depression that waxes and wanes in direct proportion to the presence or absence of external stimuli. The danger inherent is this view is of placing too strong a focus on those external reinforcements. A patient who places conditions of worth on his or her actions may be convinced that others will never be in a state of approval of those actions. Such a patient may benefit more greatly from a cognitive therapy that addresses his or her maladaptive thinking patterns and self-deprecating automatic thoughts. It is the therapist’s responsibility to assess the most effective treatment based on the patient’s individual profile. The specific therapeutic approach must be tailored to the patent’s needs and capabilities. If the patient requires guidance to change maladaptive thinking, then a plan to simply change behavior is doomed to fail. The behaviorist perspective can also be interpreted as placing responsibility for depression squarely on the shoulders of the patient. Encouragement (of the patient to take charge of his or her own recovery by changing the nature of his or her personal relationships) can be effective with a strong-willed person who is committed to recovery. By helping to develop a plan of action and monitoring its success and opportunities for improvement, the behavioral therapist maintains at once a reliable presence at a respectful distance. The patient’s relationships are also important factors in depression that must be addressed to treat depression; ergo behavioral therapy must tackle negativity in that facet of the patient’s life. The therapist must assess the overall relationship dynamic and any negative patterns of communication between the patient and his or her most significant others. Ideally, a behavioral therapist has evaluated the patient and hypothesized that he or she will benefit from changing behavioral patterns. The therapist patient will then work closely with the patient to assess the nature of his or her innate behavioral patterns to determine which are constructive and which detract from his or her impression of positive reinforcement. Classical conditioning is not suited for this task but modeling and shaping may be effective. Operant conditioning, by definition, is the order of the day. The patient will receive continuous positive reinforcement for behaviors that combat his or her depression, while those that feed the depression will become extinct.

In each incident of wild fire, getting to the heart of the flames to snuff it out involves heavy machinery and brave firefighters. There are instances when the fire is too out of control and driving a truck through the wood to put it out simply just won’t do. There are cases when helicopters that could douse the flames from up high cannot fly chose enough due to the treacherous smoke that could engulf them whole, denying the pilot of needed vision top steer clear of potential hazards. In these cases, we smokejumpers zoom in to save the day.Smokejumpers are wildland firefighters who specialize in parachuting into the wild to put out dangerous fires. I took up several classes in fire technical specializations and eventually qualified to be a smoke jumper.Smoke jumping has turned out to be a very rewarding profession. I have always wanted to travel. Smoke jumping fulfills that dream of mine in two ways. Firstly, since smokejumpers are widely used in the United States for wildfire containment and there are not as many people brave enough to take the job as there are fires to put out, I usually get to travel from state to state. Secondly, being a smoke jumper necessarily makes parachuting a common event. This means that smoke jumping gives me the opportunity to jump from planes and into fires on a regular basis. One cannot continue to be a smoke jumper if one is not in the best physical shape, mental, and psychological shape.Under the extreme conditions that smoke jumping puts upon me, I have to be ab le to handle physically challenging situations effectively, I have to stay on my wits and most importantly, I have to keep my nerves steady. The physical toll is enormous. Many smoke jumpers hang their chutes by the time they are 30. The intensive trai ning and maintenance needed for the job hardly leaves me any time to go out on dates! However despite of these factors, smoke jumping is still the job that I was born to do, and I will do it for as long as I possibly can.
